Chengdu is a rapidly growing city in Southwest China with a refined culture and rich history. RIOS had the opportunity to modernize these qualities and present a landscape proposal for the 2022 International Competition of Chengdu Talents’ Park Design.
As Chengdu’s shared urban green space in the Sichuan Tianfu New District, Tianfu Talent Park will become a model park for living in the symbiosis between nature and technology. Our proposed design builds on the themes of creating an urban oasis and the new center of Chengdu in the future.
While the current park provides successful ecosystem services for the city, the park faces many challenges, including limited programs and low visitorship, severed connections by the roadways dissecting the park, limited wayfinding, and the need for economic stimulus.
By creating public places through amplification, connection, and new programs, our proposal is an ecologically rich area of activity and leisure in the heart of the city.
Our proposal repositions the existing lawn space into a multifunctional Event and Performance Venue. The Bamboo Bowl, surrounded by new forest plantings of bamboo to enclose the screen and the performance space from the roadway, features bamboo weave-inspired pavilions and a performance stage.
Pavilions would provide concessions and event rental spaces while encapsulating the existing underground garage vent shafts. Within the Bamboo Forest, our design provides an outdoor art sculpture installation program adjacent to the Guanghui Art Gallery. The Gallery also sponsors an exhibit space within the Pavilion cluster, further animating the cultural district.
Nature education connects children and nature. Nature experiences are combined with playgrounds throughout this zone, creating an immersive, interactive landscape as a playground.
The Lakefront Village would provide lakeside restaurants and tea houses with perfect views across the lake toward the cityscape and mountains. An iconic circular boardwalk and dock for dragon boat, kayak, and sailboat rentals anchor the lake corner.
We imagine Chengdu’s first beach as a hub of waterfront activity, recreation, and relaxation with views across the lake toward the city. Tea houses and restaurants offer refreshments and indoor gatherings.
The Promenade provides trees groves to provide shade, improving comfort in the heat and enhancing the urban forest. Green spaces would be connected to form larger usable lawns for flexible events and recreation. The edge of the promenade would be enhanced by breaking down the walls and paving for increased access to the water’s edge.
The Wellness Forests animates existing ecological zones with places to relax, work, and play outdoors. New wetland islands with shade pavilions for outdoor work and meetings are connected by new boardwalks. On the hilltop, camping sites are established for rental. New plantings enhance biodiversity and ecological habitat to attract migratory birds. A bird-watching observation totem rises amidst the forested hill. A ribbon-like boardwalk floats above lush wetland islands.
Tunnels are not just for crossing and should be inviting, not imposing. They are essential to connecting and activating Tianfu Park. We proposed unique tunnel experiences related to themes of water to intrigue, inspire, and invite people to linger.
Each zone is marked by a totem that announces its program to the surrounding context and other park zones. Totems would function as observation towers, where visitors can view other areas of the park.
Rising above the trees in the Wellness Forest, this totem doubles as a bird-watching observation hut and lookout with views of the Snow Mountains and cityscape.
The existing lake water display is reprogrammed to shoot a tall jet of water that can be seen from all parts of the park and the surrounding city. The jet of water becomes a new symbol of the city.
This totem functions as a media hydrant tower for lights and amplification for the Bamboo Bowl.
A pair of totems in the Adventure Forest connect a zipline attraction sponsored by a local adventure outfitter.
