Project Connect
A Transformative Transit Plan to Connect Austin
RIOS, in collaboration with HKS, UNStudio, and Gehl, is leading the landscape design of stations along the new Austin Light Rail, an initiative by the Austin Transit Partnership. The light rail system is part of Project Connect, a transit plan that will expand and improve Austin’s public transportation network in response to the city’s rapid growth. Linking the city and the entire Central Texas region, the plan features additional sustainable modes of transit that will transform the public transportation experience for all.
As part of the first phase of the Austin Light Rail Implementation Plan, RIOS’ scope spans stations that connect the community to key destinations and with the existing and future transit network. The design for each station will draw inspiration from the local ecology, natural systems, and history of Austin, creating an experience that reflects the city’s culture and surroundings.
This spirit of attunement is central to the light rail initiative. Prioritizing a people-first approach, the plan considers the need for convenient, reliable, and comfortable public transportation options for a wide range of citizens and visitors. The system will improve access to essential jobs, health care, and education, resulting in more livable, equitable, and sustainable communities while connecting to the unique local culture and nature of the city.
